DISTRIBUTION OF REFERENCES PER PAPER
This page shows plots of the references per paper distribution from 27 collections of papers covering various subjects.
References per paper is defined as the number of references cited by each paper.
The assumption that this distribution is lognormal contradicts that it is a power law as reported by Price in 1965.
There is a short dicussion of that here. The papers were collected from ISI's Web of Science product in the period from January 2002 to December 2003 by using queries and seed references. The distributions are fit to a lognormal distribution. The mean and sigma of the fitted lognormal distribution is noted.
